If you are anything like most Florida homeowners, you do a lot of laundry, and it never seems quite done. If you own a home with a septic tank, all that laundry could be putting a strain on your septic system – that is if you aren’t paying mind to a few important things. Your septic system is designed to treat wastewater, which includes that of laundry, however, it’s the detergents and other chemical additives that really do a number on the system’s functionality. In order to preserve the life of your septic system while managing your laundry, you’ll need to keep a few things in mind.
Common Denominators for Septic Overload: Laundry Edition
- Doing a lot of laundry, all at once. Too much water dumped into the septic tank at an unnatural pace causes issues with system functioning and can disrupt natural waste flow. Over time, this could result in blockages, backups, or sewage overflow into your yard. The solution is to spread laundry throughout the week.
- Doing loads of heavily soiled laundry. Clothes with mud, dirt, or debris sent through without shaking them out first risk clogging the system. Dirt and debris build up in the septic tank and move into the drain field, clogging soil and pipes. Always shake off heavy dirt before washing.
- Using too much detergent. Excessive detergent creates thick soap scum and extra suds that disrupt natural bacteria in your septic tank. Without properly functioning bacteria, solids build up faster and overflow into the drain field, leading to clogs and damage. Some detergents contain chemicals or fillers that don’t break down well and add to sludge buildup. Use only septic-safe detergent in recommended amounts.
- Using fabric softener. Many fabric softeners contain chemicals that disrupt natural bacteria in your septic tank and leave behind residue that leads to clogs. Recommended alternatives include a half cup of white vinegar or ½ cup of baking soda to naturally soften clothes and neutralize odors.
If any of the above are causing issues, your septic system may experience one or more of the following:
- Your sinks and showers are draining slower than usual
- You notice a strong sewage smell inside or outside your home
- There’s standing water or soggy spots in your yard
- Your toilets or drains make gurgling or bubbling noises
If you notice any of these issues, call a septic professional right away.
Making changes in your laundry habits can help your septic system from breaking down and costing you significant repairs. Take preventative measures when it comes to your laundry routine.
